Biotechnology's Impact on Higher Education

Julia Susan Frink

Around the world, billions of dollars are being invested in the biotechnology boom. Countries and states hope it will spur economic development. Universities hope to generate revenue through the commercialization of academic inventions. As the quest to remake the academic research infrastructure continues, the academic and economic landscapes change. These changes will be examined in both the United States and global contexts with emphasis on triple helix partnership formations, academic research support and economic development trends. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate biotechnology's impact on higher education institutions.
